starting issue today

starting issue today
i get in the jeep it starts fine i go to work and at lunch i got to start it and it just cranks,, (97 xj 4.0) so i just touch the gas pedal and it fires. runs fine plenty of power,, at the end of the day it does it again seems like it will only start if i hit the gas pedal,, and when it fires i smell fuel,, could this be the fuel pump on its way out?
