So after a week of wheeling in Colorado, I got home and my starter is acting cranky. Pun intended. Battery is good.
The oil filter adapter has been leaking for quite some time, and I suspect things finally caught up with the starter. My question is this: if I replace the solenoid and give the armature, brushes, and commutator a good cleaning...is that not a total overhaul? What else could go wrong with a starter? Should I just get a brand new unit?
Currently don't have anything setup to do a bench test.

I would look at replacing the adapter O-rings too, doesn't make sense to salvage the starter and then spew more oil on it. Most autozones will bench test the starter for free as well.

I just did mine about two to three weeks ago. There are three O-rings in there that need to be replaced, if you have the tools it is an easy fix. I got a buddy who has a '94 and mine is a '95 and we did them both in about three hours.Originally Posted by rusty_bucket
I think my adapter is leaking as well, I need to do something about that...

Replace the adapter o-rings. Disassemble and clean the starter with brake cleaner.

Go to your Chrysler dealer and get a Oil Filter Adaptor Seal Package, part number 4720363. Cheap.
Make sure you lube the O-rings with motor oil when assembling the to the bolt.

Thanks for the kind words.
Wait til you see how simple that starter is to "rebuild".

yup that's right, just 2 bolts to pull the starter apart, two more screws to remove the brush assembly, and two screws to take solenoid out.Originally Posted by cruiser54
