starter staying on till put in gear

I have a 94' cherokee 4.0 having a probem with the starter staying on until I put it in gear. I have put a new starter in looked for shorts. Anyone have input on poss problem with this?

If auto, check ignition switch for sticking in start position.

x 2 on the bendix thought,

also could have a sticking relay since you say you have a new starter... Did the problem start before or after you changed the starter? I would guess before from your post but it would help to know for sure.

It also did it before I put the new starter in it actually used to stay on when my key was turned off till i pressed it hard into park. That problem has'nt came back since new starter and ignition switch have been put in. Is the bendix part of the starter? Where is this part located?
