Default Starter issues

Hello All,
I'm working on my neighbors 96 XJ 4.0 Automatic. The starter will not engauge and Im looking for some help with it. Here is what we have done.

1. Neutral Saftey switch has been replaced. Verified contiunity on pins when Park, neutral, reverse.
2. Replaced starter. Did not need to, but he had one that he had bought. jumping the positive to the igination terminal will make the starter work.
3. Replaced ignition switch without any good results.

Looking for other suggestions.

Thanks,
Codfish

If you don't have 12v to the solinoid wire with the ignition switch at the start position, just start working backwards till you find out why. You mentioned the NSS was replaced, was it also cleaned and greased?

I think there is a relay, isn't there? Guess you know the problem is probably not a wire it's self, but a connection or component. Is there a click somewhere as you turn to start? If you find that check the connections on the relay, then the relay.? Try jumping your new switches.

I can't go look under my hood to compare at the moment, but I would think the starter relay would be under the hood in the power distribution center? If it is switch out the relay with the aux fan relay and see if it kicks over.

Maybe tell your neighbor that the library has manuals. My Lib. provides online access to theirs. "jumping the positive to the igination terminal"...You do mean to the solenoid I assume.

Maybe someone here can help. I would think there would be a relay under the hood along with others. An inch square blue or black plastic cube.

"when Park, neutral, reverse" No No No. It should not work in reverse. Something there is wrong. Try holding the key on and going through all the gears. FOOT ON BRAKE!

I know some of the relays are the same, don't know which. Yea, you can swap it with one that has the same printing on it. Do be careful not to end up with something else messed up!

Lol If you get really stuck you can just tell your neighbor to take it to a mechanic and figure it out himself

Ah!....Thank you Dukie. I had no clue the relay ground waz through the NSS. That will likely save me some headache someday, unless I ground the NSS wire, then it may cause one!

See how you are! Put me up to the challenge. Will see what he does with it this week and maybe if he does not do anything with it I will get back to it.

Thanks for all of your help,
Codfish
