Default Starter Grommets Question

Would grommets (terminals) with a 90 degree bend help with cable/wire routing from the starter, or is the stock setup the best thing going?

You talking about the battery cable lug?
If so I used a 90 degree on mine.
In hindsight though should probably have used a 45 degree one.
When I was mocking it up the one thing I did not realize was that I had to get a socket on that nut.
Where the bend of the lug is on the bottom of the nut it is tight and you struggle a bit to get a socket on securely.
But it can be done with my set up.

Thanks. Was wondering about a 45 also.

When I get back to the electricals will be using the heavy copper, tinned lugs. Not sure about messing with that smaller wire (feed wire?). The starter has been replaced once and rebuilt once, not sure if that plastic shield is still there. Will have to crawl under and look.

Looks like these guys have the heaviest tin plated copper 45 degree lugs, and the rest of the stuff to stick onto some good marine grade wire.

I don't think you want those.
I get the feeling that you are not really crimping them with an HF crimper.
I think you need the really expensive type.
Better off with these in the plated ones IMO.

I probably overthought my battery cables.
But IMO you just don't crimp the lugs on either end and hook it up.
If you did that the orientation of the position of the lugs might wrong and you can't hook them up.
You can twist 12 gauge wire all you want.
But how much can you twist 2 gauge. Especially in shorter lengths.
I cut the length I needed and crimped one end. Then mocked it up so I could crimp the second lug in the position I wanted so it would bolt right on.
Also remember at the battery if you are hooking up 2 lugs to one side of the military terminals you want them back to back.
I put them both on one side because the other side I want to use for an aux fuse box.
I tried to think it through.

Yes, that is the basic steps I went through on just the battery ends. Planning on getting plenty of cable, crimping the starter lug, then running the cable up to the battery and clocking that end cutting, stripping, fitting, marking, then pulling that out and crimping with the lug at the orientation marked by test fit. Heavy weatherproof adhesive shrink tube too.

Same process from PDC (90 degree lug) to straight lug at battery, etc.

And I plan on putting the battery end lugs on opposite sides of the military terminals. No plans to hook up extra stuff, just two cables per battery terminal, with the step facing in (like yours closest to the lead).

Clocking. That was the word I was looking for. LOL.
I think the step should be facing in too.

Pretty sure I can crimp them with the hammer crimper I got from Airgas. HF doesn't sell them anymore. Have been debating getting the HF hydraulic crimper, but crimping everything out on the garage floor I'll have room to swing the hammer.

Plan on doing something like this again, with new wire and stuff. Ignore the positive side mess. Have fixed-ish that.

Did you notice that it looks like you put 2 crimps in those?
I don't know.
But if you do go down that road will be curious what happens.

Not sure what you are looking at. The heavy lugs in that picture are these, with double application of adhesive lined heat shrink: https://www.delcity.net/store/Compre...19666.h_819667

Not planning on using those when I fabricobble new cables together.

The 8 AWG to the body has a hammer crimped connector, one whack.

The ones at the Remy battery site, that is where I bought mine, at the link you posted.
Look closely at the picture of one.
See how it says Crimp 1 and Crimp 2?

I am a little lost here. I posted this link and it doesn't say Crimp 1 and Crimp 2 on the lug. I have seen others that have marks where to set the crimper die. Have a link to the specific ones you are talking about?
