If you are whacking on the starter to make it work, then the brushes inside are probably worn out.

Replace the starter.

So any one do these starters not work when warm when they are bad?

Today i went out and started it 15 times in a row no problems and when i hit the starter it was just a 17mm wrench and i tapped it more than anything about 3 times just curious is there a loose wire

I no on the fox mustangs the starter wires go bad and if you replace them no problems after that they do it also when hot

I just rebuilt my friends 89 CK starter and it did the exact same thing yours is doing, sometimes it started and sometimes it wouldn't, I put new brushes in and cleaned the armature with a dremel wire brush and now it starts every time...Tj

Yea that's why I rebuild my own starters and alternators. Try looking for an "Electric Motor" shop, they usually have the parts you will need...Tj
