Default Stalls after long time in 4x4 low

Hi fellas. I need some help from you pros. I have a 99 cherokee sport with 115000 miles on it. Earlier this winter I went 4x4 camping. While on the trail I had to put it in 4x4 low and go really slow for most of the time. The jeep would run fine for a long while, but at the first creek crossing I got out to take a photo. When I got back in and started to give it gas, it sputtered and finally stalled. I tried to restart it, but it wouldn't. At this point I'm freaking out. So I wait about 20 minutes and then it starts without a problem. This kept happening over and over the whole trip. As long as the jeep kept moving it ran fine, but when I slowed down to much or stopped it runs rough and stalls when I try to give it gas. Does anyone know what could cause this?

Fuel pump, Fuel filter or CPS?

Next time it "dies" have a helper check for spark with a spare spark plug.

That will narrow it down to spark or fuel.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not sure I know what CPS stands for.

CPS = Continuous Particle Sensor.

LOL..

Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Very common part that wears out over time and seems to be effected by heat.

Google Jeep 4.0 CPS.

Purchase from the DEALER only. You will want to only replace this ONCE.

Agree with all of this. Cps is most common for those symptoms. And you most Definelty are only going to want to do it once! It's a pain to get to but it can be done. Plan on gathering some extensions and a wobble!

I had the same issue, changing the O2 sensor fixed it.

I ended up having a shop replace the CPS once when the jeep wouldn't start, but I can't remember if it got fixed before or after the 4x4 camping trip. I really need to give my jeep some attention. I've ordered an "elm327 Bt dongle" to see if I can go out and recreate the problem. It'll give me an excuse to drive out to the mountains.
