When I reinstalled the distributor, the rotor was closer to the 6 o'clock position and I put the pin tool in the proper. I feel like a failure...

Prior to removing the distributor the second time,
I had to turn the crank a few times before getting right to "0," could that put the timing off?

Yes, exactly at "0," but I had to go around more than once because I passed it a few times.
