Split rims
#4
Why do you want them? I work for a truck shop and have to deal with them a lot. I'd say stay away. They're dangerous and hard to come by anymore. Only benefit would be military run flats but I've only seen them for hummers, big trucks, and heavy equipment.

Only if there were no other choice would I have them.
In 1968 a 15" truck split rim killed a friend of mime in a service station in Gardner, KS., he had just repaired a flat (tube repair) when airing it up boom. The upper half of his head and scalp were stuck on the ceiling in the garage. The blood stain remained there for a long time afterwards for a reminder for everyone that came in.
Buy bead locks if you think that you need to run that low of a psi.

Clue: Why do you suppose they put split rims on Humvees?
Anyway, I know of a place that will custom build them, well out of my price range, just wondered if there was anything known to bolt on...

Why would anyone in there right mind want to use them if they don't have to???? They are the most dangerous thing I have ever seen. Most places wont even touch them. The only places that I know of that will are big rig shops.

I wasn't even aware they still made 'em!
Many years ago I worked at a service station. The station across the street had propped a split ring wheel up after someone had repaired it I guess.
The ring blew off and came across the 4 lane street and put a dent in one of our gas pumps.
Luckily no one was in between!

Not sure if there are other manufacturers.

I think a lot of the horror stories are circulated by tire shops, 'cause if you have and know how to use split rims, you don't need the tire shops anymore. The whole point of 'em is that you can be out in the wilderness, get a stick through a sidewall, remove the injured wheel, break it down then and there, and mount a new tire and tube, bolt it up and go.
There's not a lot of places in the US that are extreme enough to require that capability, but IMHO, it's just another tool. Choose to use it or not...
