spline count
i have seen some contradictory info on this. i have a 99 xj with a np242. i might need to replace front driveshaft. is it a 27 spline count? wiki says:
1996–1999: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.
but i see allot that says otherwise. also, im assuming that axleshaft and driveshaft are the same thing?

No, on the wiki link it is talking about the axle shafts that are inside the front axle. I am assuming you are talking about the front driveshaft going from the tcase to the front axle. You don't need to know the spline count of anything there to replace that driveshaft. The yoke is bolted onto the tcase and on the pinion. So to replace the driveshaft you just need to get one that is the right length. On the axle end it has two straps that hold the ujoint to the pinion yoke, and 4 bolts that hold the cv ujoint to the tcase output yoke.

I believe the axle-shafts would be the half-shafts from the diff(s) to the wheel hubs. Again.. I'm not a Jeep guy... but I'm judging based on terms from the vehicles I've owned and serviced.

awesome, thank you, that answerers everything and corrects my incorrectness. thank you! i was a little mixed on the terms.. any info on what length front driveshaft is needed? -99 xj w/ np242.
the reasoning behind all this is that i have an issue that started when in 4wd, hi, low, full or part time. it sounded like the chain in the TC had stretched and was rubbing on the internals. then it got worse when in 4. now its a bad vibration when in 2wd and at speed and a clunking at lower speed/turning. so i want to see if pulling the front shaft eliminates the issue.. cheaper than TC work... bummer it supposed to snow like 9" in the am... haha

Axle shaft is from the diff to the hub, inside the front axle.
axle shaft
Drive-shaft is from the T-case to the diff.
drive shaft
*edit, bummer to late....

i got it, like i said, just mixed on term. got it now, axle shaft is the same as half shaft, its not a driveshaft, i understand the location of them, thank you.
