Afternoon,

I read a bunch of threads but only found a few with the same issues (Year range & Problems) but no resolution.

I have a 98' Classic and today the Speedo / Tach began going from actual to 0 and the airbag light came on.

However, the other gauges still worked.

Later then turned jeep on and none are working including gas/temp & airbag light is on. However, the signals, cruise control, & the light for the Odometer still work. (But the Miles are NOT increasing on the Odometer as I travel)

The Digital Odometer in the overhead however is increasing as I travel.

Any suggestions? I may try to clean the contacts first but I found it strange that the lights & Odometer reading are working.

Thanks,

Josh

That should take care of your problem. I had the exact same thing happen to my 98. But i just hit the dash above the instrument cluster and they come back on for me. Anyways, Clean all the contact check the grounds and add some dialectic grease on the clean contacts.

I would like to confirm that the "Slap from above" fixed the issue!

Thanks,

Josh

Just expect it to happen again. Because you do have a bad connection in there. So do I. I'm just to lazy to fix it.
Glad I could help.

Another temp fix is to push the pin that changes from total miles to trip miles-works everytime.

I just had this happen to my 99 Sport on the ride home today. Tach/speed unresponsive, airbag light on. Apparently another old thread (2009) says that there's a replacement connector from the mfg, anyone have any further info on that?

So many electrical gremlins in this thing.

I'm having the same problem in my 96 sport. Swapped out the speed sensor, the computer, and now the whole instrument cluster. I tried cleaning all the contacts and that seemed to fix the problem for a week or so then it came back. Anyone with more info on this it would be greatly appreciated.

The cluster electrical connector(s) is the weak link.

I already cleaned both of them at both sides. I just read someone else solved the issue by cleaning up the ground at the engine. So my next project seems like it's going to be a check and refresh of all the grounds.

There's a Chrysler Technical Service Bulletin that addresses this.

If you want to replace the connector (per the TSB) you'll need to get it from the dealer. You can get a copy of the TSB from them as well. It will have the instructions for the change. The new connector comes as a kit.

Having this issue now: the speedo and tach are pretty intermittent. Hitting dash doesn't help. So I'm thinking about pullin dash apart to get to the cluster. I'm assuming that the issue lies back there, but any thoughts before I tear into it? Besides discoing the battery first?

Clean all the contacts good, there are 2 plugs on the back of the cluster. After that the advice I'm hearing is to find and clean all the grounds at the engine but I haven't gotten that far yet. Also the last post mentioned a TSB but I can't find it yet to see what info it adds.

I like the suggestion to clean and "adjust" the contact points so as to ensure a solid contact. If that doesn't work, on to replacing. Thanks for the link^
