Default Speedo problem

I just bought a 91 Cherokee Limited. The guy I bought it off of replaced the diffrential with one out of a salvage yard, but the speed sensor ends didn't match up so it was left unhooked. I would like to hav a working speedometer, and was wondering are there markings on a diffrential that would tell me what year it came from? He could only tell me it was newer than a 91.

Any help at all would be appreciated!

There might be a tag attached to the diff cover, you can look up the code to determine the gearing, if not you'll have to pull the cover and either count the teeth or look up the number on the ring. My speedo is WAY off, 32's and 4.56 gears. I just use a GPS for speedo and odometer.

YEah, I've been doing that too. I just like things to work the way they are supposed to. I'm brand new to the Jeep world, so it may be a never ending search to get to that end....lol

I don't have the funds to go crazy on the mods, and will likely keep it fairly stock for now at least. it's my DD, but once I get another vehicle, I may play with the mods more. Right now I am focused on undoing some neglect and shortcuts that have been done to it.

You need to replace the speedo gear in the transfer case. I haven't done it so I can't tell you how... Someone else will chime in I'm sure.

I was told initially that if I can figure out what year the TC was, I could use that plug and splice it in and use it instead of the factory one. would this work?

There are two plugs that are hanging down by the transfer case. one is male and the other female. the female one looks like the plug on the transfer case, but the place on the TC is 3 wire. I can't see where the male connector goes. I went to pick and pull and got a 3 wire connector to go on the TC, but then I can't figure out which two wires from the TC to splice the two existing wires to. I put the plug in the TC, and Tried a few combinations, but nothing worked. is there a write up in a thread how to make this work? I need the group's expertise on this!

you need to get a sensor for a 91 does not matter what year tc is Autozone sells them, other wire might be 4x4 light.http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=940438_0_0_

That sounds like the best way to fix it. I think there is something I am missing though. The link you had shows one with a triangleish connector, but the connector on the xj doesn't look like that. I have attached a pic of the TC, with the current speed sensor (which I know will be changed), and the two wires I was asking about. the green one is the male connector and the one with red is the female. I apologize if I am just missing something, I am learning as I go.

I found the plug, it's not exactly where you show, but it's on top above the linkage. I tried the green, but the receptor is larger than this plug. he thought the TC came out of a 95, so i am assuming this plug is a different style as well.
