Ok, I've got a few questions regarding the speedo gear for my 96. First off, I went to my local Jeep dealer and he ran my VIN and printed me a list of tire sizes and corresponding gears. Now he also printed off a diagram, that shows how it gets inserted into the transfer case(I knew this but that's not the point) In the diagram it shows the longer Jeep speedo gear, but when I go to Quadratec they show the short one for use in a 1996 sport? I haven't had the time to pull the one out that I have, so I'm just wondering if someone can give me a quick answer if it's the short one or the long one?

Secondly I've been having trouble figuring out what tooth count gear to get. According to the VIN it came with 225s on it, and that's what were on it when I bought it, but the speedometer was off by about 5mph(if it said 60 you were going 55) and the guy I got it from also gave me a set of 205s(which I assume is what was on it for the gear in it now). So I put 235/75/15 wrangler Duratracs on it last week and want to get the speedo corrected. So I tried the charts you find online, and half of them said I need a 33 tooth gear and the other half said I need a 34?! I measured the tires and they are 29" diameter and the circumference is 91" it's an auto with the 3.55 gears and the 321 transfer case. The list the dealer gave me doesn't list this size tire, but it does have a listing for a straight 29" tire and it says it's a 33 tooth, but it also lists 225 as a 33 tooth, and there is one more listing for a 225 that says 34 tooth. Sorry if this is a lot to post but I figure the more info the better. Thanks in advance!

 

The previous owner of my XJ had 235s on it, and it had a 34 tooth gear. I just took it out re geared it with a 32 tooth for my 245/75/16s. I would go with a 34 tooth. I'll sell you my old one if you need it.

 

Thanks! I found a bunch of 34 teeth ones at the JY it was the 33 tooth one I was having a hrd time finding! I appreciate the offer though. Can someone just verify for me that it is in fact the short one that I need?

 

It should be the short one, it honestly takes about 1-2 minutes to pull it out of your transfer case. All you need is a 1/2 socket if I remember correctly.

 

Yeah.. I know. I have no excuse. Except I have been busy this week and won't have any free time till sun/mon. Wait, that sounded an awful lot like an excuse... thanks, that's what I thought I just wanted confirmation and I wasn't able to do it as I was at work when I first posted!

the one from my 95 zj 242 and 93 zj 249 were both short shaft and were interchangeable. they were both electronic speedo pickup.

the ones from my early xj's with cable speedo were long shaft.

not sure if that is how it's determined, but were in my cases.

 

Mine came with 225's, previous owner put on 235's, I bolted on a set of 30's. I got tired of trying to find the right gears and and rely on my GPS for speed. I run about 5 mph fast so if I put the speedo on the speed limit, I am about 5 over and the POPO leave me alone.

 

I'm getting there, this is my last shot and them I'm just gonna do the same! So I found a 34 tooth gear at the JY on Monday and finally had time today to dig in there for the old one. I open up the transfer case and lo and behold but there is already a 34 tooth gear in there. Aaaargh! So while driving home I get the GPS out and I find that I am 3mph off consistently. At 40 I'm actually doing 37, 55=52, 60=57 and so on. So my question is will a 33 tooth gear help correct this or is there any other way that the speedometer could have been adjusted or possibly messed up? From the factory it had 225s and a 34 tooth gear but when I bought it, it was off by about 5mph with those same size tires and gear(granted the tires were bald). Ideas?

 

most cars are usually off a bit from factory. that's why the police gives a few mph grace.

i use my gps on every vehicle i drive, and the only one that was on par was my international work truck. and that's in mph, where as all my jeeps and my dakota are in kph, considering i'm in canada.

 

does anyone know if the 2wd uses the same spedo drive gears as the 4wd?
I know the 4wd is in the tail of the transfercase and frankly havent crawled under mine to see where it is on mine. I want to change up tire size and maybe even rear gear but want the nifty mpg/ tripmeter gauge to still be accurate too
