hey guys i have 98 cherokee limited/ automatic 2wd and i just replaced the rear speed sensor and pinion gear.. sensor is fine but my pinion gear was torn to shreds it looks just like the one i replaced and i drove it only one time.. i have stock rims and tires nothing over sized and the gear had 36 teeth now has none and its about half the size it was when i put it in..
When i put the gear in it didnt seem to really lock in place with anything i was able to move it a 1/4" in and out, but would not fall out so i thought it supposed to have some free play.... there was one hole that looked like a screw of some sort would be to hold it in but looked around and didnt find anything about it... i need help with this, when i first bought the car i didnt get 5 miles away before my tranny would not shift and not move...
I went to tranny shop they told me i need a new tranny... bs i changed the filter and flushed it.. drove fine afterwards still no problems with shifting.. the filter was clogged with what look like orange plastic shreds.. now i know where it was from the pinion gear.. i have to do it again so i dont have the same problem...
What would cause the gear to be torn up??? Please help...

The part your describing is not a pinion gear, it's a speedometer gear. Pinion is in the axle.
You saying you have no "fork" or bolt holding the speedo gear and housing put on the transmission.. should be one bolt just outside the hole. You need this to hold the unit in position.
Take a closer look at the speedo housing, you'll see numbers. You need to adjust (turn) the housing till the tooth count number used matches up with the marks on the housing.
Carefully turn the new one in till it makes contact, then back off slightly and bolt it down.
You may have issues with that plastic residue inside your trans...

Not to discredit you, just a note to say that the gear drive for the speedo is considered a pinion gear, and is commonly called a speedometer gear as well. Either term will net the needed information.
Your info as to the installation is dead on, and if done otherwise may result in the destruction of the plastic teeth.

Short shaft should be correct- older jeeps starting about 1966 used the long shaft. 36 teeth sounds right, but i didn't see your tire size. Good luck!

ok thank you.. since you guys help me so much with this i want to make sure everything goes well with this install... when i put the first speedo gear on there was some play in the adapter.. i was able to move the gear in and out of the adapter about 1/8 to 3/8 in and out.. but would not just fall out.. my question is how should it lock into the adapter?? once put in should it move at all or have some play??

Hello again, well i finally got around to installing the new speed o gear and just want to verify i did it the right way this time.... i pulled the sensor, pulled the housing off, installed new gear.. re installed housing counted with gear 36 and lined it up with the mark on the tranny housing..and put the sensor back on...
Now, i have everything loose fit since the number doesn't lined up exactly with the mark on tranny.. it was unable to line up because the notches on the adapter where the fork holds made me move it a lil so it can bolt in..will this effect the performance of the gear? sorry for the poor explanation to early in the morning... but i think you might have an idea... thank you all the help
