In my '87 I was able to fit two infiniti 5.5" tweeter/woofers in the front and two 6.5" infiniti tweeter/woofers in the back gate. I'm running that with a dual (brand) receiver that has HD radio, Aux port, usb, and a cd deck. One of my friends said "god you've got a really s**tty woofer."
The fact that he thought the thing had a woofer at all is a testament to this sound system. It works great and I'd definitely recommend having the receiver. It works great, sounds great, and the HD radio stations are mostly ad-free.

In my 01' XJ I have 2-polk audio 5 3/4 in speakers in the rear and 2-polk audio 6 1/2 in speakers in the front doors with a kenwood CD player with aux-in for my ipod and a single 12 in kicker sub with 400 watt mtx jack hammer amp and could not have a more balanced system. It hits hard for any rap(which is what I mainly listen to) and i have no distortion even with everything as loud as it goes and still makes the little bit of metal i listen to sound great as well.

Here is what I run in my 99 XJ .. Clarion Head Unit w/ front USB and built in 4x50w amp (25w RMSx4) pushing Infinity Reference 6 1/2" w/ 150Hz Bass Blockers (2-50w RMS) in front doors and Infinity Reference 5 1/4" w/ 300Hz Bass Blockers (2-45w RMS) in rear roof. I run a Pioneer 760w amp (125w RMSx2) pushing a ported box holding 2 Infinity Kappa 6 1/2" component system (2-90w RMS) and 2 Kicker Comp subs (50-150w RMS).
In general for subs (well every speaker for that matter) has a RMS watt rating and a MAX watt rating .. disregard the max rating the important rating is the RMS range for best sound U want to push at the high end (or slightly over) of the RMS watt rating .. for ex. my subs are rated at 50-150w RMS so U would want to push them with a amp rated at 110-165w RMS .. this is how U get the best bang and sound for the buck.
If U have speaks/subs that have a way higher RMS then ur amp will push they will seem weak and in most cases sound worse then cheaper speaks/subs at the correct rating for ur amp/head unit. This is why U hear statements like "I bought 800$ Boston Acoustic subs and they never came close to hitting as hard as my 100$ Sony subs". Well come to find out that guy was trying to push Boston Acoustics with a 100-1000w RMS with a 100w RMS amp, so ofcourse the 50-125w RMS Sonys sound better with that amp.
Hope that all made sense .. I ramble somtimes lol.
EDIT: Also if U run a sub box make sure it is PORTED, ported sub boxes hit harder and louder because they allow the sub to flex and breathe better.

I know the max depth for my 5.25" front speakers (in door) on my 95 XJ is about 2.25 inches. Is the same true for the rear speakers (in the tailgate)? Does anybody know the max mounting depth for those?
