Ok...I was looking at new speakers for my XJ, and I was wondering: who has aftermarket speakers in their XJ?

What size and location?

I liked the 5.5's and 6.5's, but the 5x9's sounded awesome and I dunno if I want the hassle of making them fit and making speaker grilles for them.....

I've got Pioneers in the front door panels.

But they're stock size. (5 1/4")
I only replaced them cause the stock infinities were blown.
I'm not a "sterio guy", but i think it would have been able to fit 6 1/2" without cutting anything.

I'm just not into it being superloud.

Besides, that'll take $$$ from my rockslider fund!

Its not the cutting, it's the speaker grilles, I'm too damn lazy to fab stuff up...

The only thing you have to worry about putting bigger speakers than the stock size would be the depth the larger speakers would have. Bigger speakers=a bigger cone=more depth=bigger magnet in the back. I tried putting some 6 1/2's in the door but got worried when i realized that the magnet in the back would be coming awfully close to the backside of the door. That and I wasn't all that crazy about fabbing up some new mounting brackets. I put some 5 1/4 Sony speakers in my Jeep and they sound good. Not sure what you're looking for sound wise out of your system. My recommendation would be to upgrade your door speakers and rear overhead speakers but add a little powered sub as well. The upgraded speakers will sound good but the added depth of sound the powered bu will provide will be well worth it. Good luck!

The rear hatch could easily be modified to fit larger speakers and the grills that come with them. The front could be as well. It's just a matter of enlarging the opening and attaching them on the outside of the door panel. No fabing really needed.

well the 5x9's don't have or come with a speaker grille, So I'd have to make them, and I'm kinda feeling lazy....

That brand of 6 1/2" speakers did you guys get to fit your stock door and hatch holes. I don't want to hack my interior up either but, I want to move up to the biggest speakers that will fit the stock holes. I have 1 blown door speaker and the ones in the hatch are sounding pretty distorted when I crank it up so, it is time. Maybe Santa will stuff some speakers in my stocking if I'm a real good boy.

i am going to run 6.5 inch cheap pioneer speakers in the doors because they wont be on most of the time.
i pulled a sound bar out of a 1997 Cherokee and thats getting my set of 6.5inch infinity kappa components and thats going right above the front seats. as far as the rear of the jeep goes i wont put anything back there except for maybe an 8 inch sub and a small amp thats hidden

i put the infinities 6.d in my over head unit in my 98 and but alpine 5 1/4 in the doors, i wish i would have gotten 6.5 for the doors because the 5 1/4 do not come close to fitting and the 6.5's in the rear fit like a glove. you will have a better fit and better sound if you just put 6.5 all around. my .02

good luck

I wish I had read this thread before I put in Pioneer 5 1/4" speaks in my doors and soundbar. I thought it looked like there was some extra space in there. I've been pondering over putting a pair of 6x9s in the rear hatch as my 95' Sport didn't come with any speakers back there. Has anyone done this? I'm mostly concerned with wether or not it's even worth the hassle...

The rear speakers on my '92 are in the lift gate itself, not on a soundbar. I was looking at mine for the 5x9's, and if you don't mind cutting, it doesn't look that hard to pull off.

I installed Infinity 6.5" with the dome tweeter mounted just above the speaker locale in the door panel. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1086020...cs.html?tp=106 The 6.5 fits nicely in the door with no problems at all...I mounted the crossovers on the lower console near the floorboard (I should really post some pics) and with my Kenwood head unit it sounds sweet...

In the rear I installed the 5.25 infinity 2 ways http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1085022...2i.html?tp=105 that match up to my door speakers...After I got the first one in, I realized that you CAN fit certain 6.5" speakers in the rear sound bar...This summer I am hocking the 5.25's and moving up to the 6.5's for the rear...Also installing a home brew XJ pod and Infinity amp where my spare used to be...

If youve got the ca$$h and you like your tunes to sound good, this is a place to start...

I would say get a decent set of component speakers for the front. ANd whatever you want for the back. If you are interested I have a couple of 6x9 enclosures for sale possibly.

Can I put 6" speakers in the front? The depth for the 5 1/4" speakers and my 6" are the same. What is the depth I have to stay under in the rear? Will the speaker connectors on the factory speakers connect to the aftermarket, or do I have to get speaker adapters? Anyone know where I can find a mounting kit with a pocket for my Cherokee?
