Oil that leaked down from a bad valve cover gasket or anti-seize on the threads? It's a good idea to put Permatex Copper anti-seize on the threads before screwing them in.

Since it sounds like you've never done the plugs before, make sure to hand tighten them in before bringing out a ratchet. You do NOT want to cross thread the spark plug holes by accidentally putting them in on an angle

No anti-seize they are in now. I Han starts the ones I could, the other two I ha to put in the rachet, they all went in nice and easy before hitting resistance and then only turnin a tad more before beig locked

All, ALL, Every Jeep Cherokee left the Factory with Champion spark plugs. Alot of people believe that NGK plugs work well the coil packs on 2000 thru 2006 4.0s. I have AutoLite 985 plugs in my Beloved SilverStone Metallic 2001 Cherokees 4.0 and It has done well with them for the past 4 years. My parents 2001 Cherokee has had Autolite Platinum 985 plugs in its 4.0 for the past 40,000 miles and has had no problems. Run whatever You want, But please dont get the wrong idea about HAVING to use NGK plugs in 2000 and 2001 Cherokees.

Indeed the FSM for the 2000 XJ specifies that the factory plug was Champion RC12ECC. My parts fiche lists NGK ZFR5N as the only part number to be ordered. Unfortunately this parts fiche doesn't have a date that I can find (interactive PDF) so I'm not sure when Chrysler changed the recommended plugs. I have always read that the NGKs held up better on account of the waste spark generated by shared coil packs.
