Default spark plug gaps

I tried to search and found nothing. I am on my mobile app and searching is tough. So anyways i read on here that the proper gap is .035. So i checked my plugs and they are all wider than that. Should i smash them down and gap they to exactly .035 or leave them how they are. none are way over that make just slightly bigger than what is recommended.

I would gap them to the proper gap. The gapping tool should have a cutout for easily making the gap adjustment. Smashing them is crud.

I've been making the ones in both the XJ's here .037 because the factory coil is hot enough for that. Still has good power and economy.

If someone put a hotter ignition coil on then they might have opened up the gap to fatten the spark.

these are spark plugs from the store, they haven't been in an engine yet and they are bigger than required, so i will gap them to the correct distance, and i apologize for saying smash them together that was a bad word. thanks for your help.

Stock ignition...stay with 0.35
Moded...you can go wider. Either way make them the same. Pick a line and go for it...

Right out of the box they aren't gapped top spec since they fit a range of vehicles with different ignition systems that require different gaps, always double and triple check before installing new plugs

You should always gap your new plugs.
