spare tire sun damage

Default spare tire sun damage
I have heard leaving a spare tire on the roof oncovered and fade and maybe even rot the tire. Is this true? Should I cover it?

Over lonf periods of time a tire will crack and weather,I think if you put a protectant on it like armour all would be enough.
