There have been issues with the Fram filters on our Jeeps. The biggest problem is that since our Jeeps have oil filters that mount upside down or sideways, we must have a filter with an excellent anti-drainback valve to insure we don't get "dry starts" from an empty oil filter. Fram has a crappy valve and a poor filtering media long with poorly assemblued/glued innards. Go to youtube and search Fram. And, for the heck of it, read the following link.

Everything you described is exactly how my jeep runs. Slight tick in the bottom end of the motor runs 210°F it's all normal 4.0s like somebody already said aren't exactly quiet they have a slight tick to em and they run in the 210-215° range. I went through the same thing when I got my first xj but I talked to prolly 50 or 60 ppl and they all said it was normal

I think there is just a regular purolator white oil filter on her as of now.

I bought some high mileage penzoil 10w-40, a bottle of lucas ...
I'm not a fan of using any additive. I don't think it's necessary. I also use 10W-30 Mobil 1 oil in my Jeeps, not 40 or high-mileage stuff.

But everyone on here seems to have a different opinion on oil and filters. It's a real hot button for some.

It would be better if we would all agree to disagree on that issue I think. And go on down the road.

Yeah alot of people are torn when it comes to additives. I personally have had great success with lucas. I put a bottle in my oil everytime I changed the oil in my old bronco, believe it or not I actually saw a 2 MPG increase in fuel mileage!

Orange can of death made me laugh. Frams suck. We cut one open in college and they have poorly glued paper end caps which WILL (not might!) seperate from media and bypass dirty oil. Also X2 on the cheapo POS drainback valve. I try to use an OEM(motorcraft, AC delco, mopar) filter. Also donaldson, They make high quality fleet oil/air/fuel filters.

Serious? Did you save the old filter so you could cut it apart?

Sorry but I didn't even think about it at the time cuz I was in a rush to finish fixing my truck up for my trip to Florida this coming weekend

That would have been a great idea to do to show how bad the OCOD is.

Yeah, it woulda. But oh well. I heard there's a youtube video about it but never looked.

Ever stop t think how many 4.0s would still be around if the owners hadn't used that filter or another cheapy equivalent? They'll run about forever with simple maintenance but dry starts every time in their lifespan has to take it's toll.

As I have said before, the salvage yards are full of vehicles that have Fram filters on them.
