Hi again, my first pester!

99% of the time I use my XJ on road and 1% for drving across a grassy field.
Is there any way to soften the ride in town, especially over speed humps and potholes?

There seems to be a host of heavy-duty lift-kits but I can't find any lowering and softening kits.

 

Nothing I know of, is your jeep already lifted?

 

You can change the shocks for multisetting shocks. Then you can get under and change the ride a little by changing the shock settings. Hope that was what you were looking for. This works OK for a non-lifted Jeep but is of doubtful help with one that is lifted.

 

Old Man Emu shocks may be your answer. Let us know the set up of your rig. As long as nothing is worn out in the suspension, and your tires are decent, shocks may solve your problem. You will never be able to get a Cherokee to ride like a Benz, but with the right tire, spring and shock setup, you should be happier.

Im going to agree with kyle, personally I am running OME's and I love them. They are pricey but they provide a great ride. I highly suggest them.

 

I have BDS shocks and they are a decent compromise but are not adjustable like some of todays shocks are.

There was a company that offered lowering kits for XJ's at one time.. Used to see them pop up on E-bay once in while.. Seems like they were cut coils and a shorter rear shackle..IIRC, it provided about a 1" drop....

 

Thanks for you help! I never thought of adjustable shocks and knowing that there is/was something out the helps when searching.

I'll keep looking at post what I find.

These tyres: http://www.generaltire.com/tires/T4 Grabber HUP 225/70/R16. No road noise that I've noticed and seem ok in the wet. Medium understeer on tight slow corners but that is probably the same for all tyres on Cherokees due to the long wheel base.

 

For a good set of truly adjustable shocks look into the Rancho's, they have a meter where you can adjust them from inside the cabin.

I've had a good look around and I can't find a UK supplier but the cheapest for RS9000XL seem to be here at AUD$255 (£121+VAT or USD$238)
Postage from Austrailia is never going to be pleasant! I'll have to keep searching and researching.

I would also suggest calling www.4wd.com and ask them about getting this product for you at the lowest price. They beat any prices you find. I have no idea if they ship worldwide but i think they could.

 

Don't cut the coils to lower it. Cutting off a coil or so actually increases the spring rate and it will ride rougher.
