I have personally replaced a non c-clip Dana 35 that was being towed on a YJ behind a RV... the Jeep was in complete stock form and owned since new by the older couple... well taken care of... well... until the axle fell out... he went ahead and drug it to us and ran the drum down to the axle tube on the bottom side lol... and he paid $600 in parts for a new one from a local junkyard... lol

I think so. The bottom of the pumpkin is rounded. Isn't the 8.25 flat on bottom?

I'll see if i can post a pic.

I have 35 inch tires and exploded my ring gear. I went to a Ford 8.8 and love it.

Axle tubes are also a weak point.

I don't think the D35 is that bad... Maybe its just hit and miss, i dunno. All i know is a buddy and i have beat the living crap out of a D35 with 33's and 4:10's. When i say beat, i mean hammered.... bouncing up rocks, mud, sand, everything. Its been 10 years and we have yet to break an axle shaft, or tube, or anything. I have a D35 in my cherokee, and i don't beat on it the same, but i do go crawling, and i still haven't busted it. I know they aren't as strong as the 8.25, but i think they are still a pretty decent axle. Well at least from my experience.

Been running the D35 on 31x11.5's, open, for 2 years now & haven't broken a shaft going to Moab & everything!
Although I'm also in the process of upgrading to 35x12.5, 8.25 29 spline, 4.56 gears, & yukon shafts out back!!! Aussie this summer, if they ever come off backorder...

Was he locked?

The 33s seem to be the largest tire that a D35 can handle locked, 35s open from what I've seen.

That OPEN part has a bit to do with your success.

Locked D35s tend to break more than open D35s.

When I get an 8.25/44/8.8 or whatever I swap in once I build my XJ, my friends and I have decided we are going to do everything possible to kill the turdy five. If it doesn't break, its a spare axle.
