I want to know why its bad. What breaks? Do the wheels fall off or something? Does it burst into flames and and kill kittens?

Everyone says they suck, I just would like to know why?

According to most on here as soon as you roll a wheel over 29" close to it they explode killing small children in third world countries and the as fallout kills millions and billions of kittens being carried by cute little girls wearing pink bows in their hair.

They are great for a stock xj.The axles are week and prone to failure when trying to turn larger tires. Most common steps are....lift your xj,bigger tires for your lifted xj.Weak d35s break after some offroad fun with with your lifted xj with bigger tires.Find a 1997-2001 chrysler 8.25 or an older xj d44.

Sounds about right. Mine explodes a few times a day, it gets old after a while.

But really, the axle shafts on them are weak and break when you run 33s or bigger or lockers.

all of this coming from people who have most likely never broken a dana 35.

they do break easier than most axles but they are not tooth picks.
i drive this with a dana 35

I knew it! lol

Thanks for the info. I apparently have the 35 on my '99 with 31x10.50's and kept hearing about how I need to swap it out. Now I know why.

Learning new stuff everyday! Thanks folks!

PS...Now I'm going to get nervous everytime I see a pink bow.

your fine with 31s, if you keep the 31s just re gear it and lock it and drive the wheels off of it

For what its worth I have 35's on my Dana 35 and wheel it pretty hard...broke one shaft in two years. That's welded. Never broke a shaft on a open carrier. Shafts seem to be the weak spot.

I've yet to have a problem with my d35. But I have an 89 and I've heard the older ones are stronger because they are c clipped. But my xj has had 35's and now has 33's and I daily drive it an wheel it hard every weekend.

That seems to be the key .... bigger tires hitting a lot of heavy off road obstacles,
