Yeah some pvc, tubing and some bed liner and few other small parts work quite well. If done right and carefully (take your time) it can even be better than "store bought".

To be honest, though, if you sat in front of your truck with its hood open for 5 min and just thought, you'd be able to come up with something that will be more than sufficient.
Some 2" or 2 1/2" PVC, a couple 90s and 45s, some connectors, some screws, a hole saw, a regular saw, maybe a flat piece of plastic or two, some plastic cement, silicon, spray paint or bedliner for good looks....
and maybe one or two other things. Then get to work!
