be sure to silicone your distributor to ensure that your ignition system is water proof too or else you wont be getting the full use out of your snorkel

I made my own on my ex-TJ and it worked perfectly.

It came out of the side of the airbox, up through the hood, back towards the windshield and up with a cap on it. Filter never got wet.
When i went 4wheeling with clubs, jeepers would ask me "damn that must've taken some guts to drill a hole in that hood!" and i just reply, "nah, only took a circular saw...". I dunno what's the big deal about drilling a little 4" hole in a hood.

I plan to do this mod to my xj but have to find out if it's legal to have the snorkel on the driver's side. I'm afraid it'll block some of my vision. Not really sure yet.

As for doing it on your XJ, is there enough room to run it along the firewall and out the passenger side? I could see that being really annoying being on the drivers side...
Did it make it a hassle to open your hood with that there, or was your hole oval shaped to allow space to open and close?
Later.

I was looking under the hood of the Cherokee today and I don't know why its hard AT ALL to make a snorkel. Hell, there is already a hole on the inside of the driver fender that you would only need to enlarge, then cut the outer fender to match and run your pipe through there. Also, why is everyone keeping the factory airboxes? I would mount the filter on the end of the pipe above the jeep and make a shroud to keep the rain out of it. This would make the entire process so much easier. Just something I was thinking of anyway.

Where would I get a shroud to cover the air filter? I decided to go that route, that way it would be easier to periodically clean the filter.
You'd most likely have to make one. It wouldn't be hard, just think outside the box and you'll come up with something. In fact, I'll think something up here in a bit and post my idea after I get a few more beers in me, haha.
Actually, I just thought of a most excellent idea. I used to own a 2000 model Ford F150 V6, and the airbox was an in-line cone shaped tube...thing. Well I think I could mod one to fit on the 4.0 right off the intake tube coming from the manifold. Just throwing the old airbox out completely. Then you could just run your pipe through the fender and up the A-pillar with some sort of spout or something on it to keep the ran from running into it. I'm gonna see if I can find some pics.

Blamo.
If you look real hard you can see how it works, and how the cover goes over it with a tube. Thus, an in-line cone filter box. You could also buy the cheapo paper filters for an F150 instead of the $20 cone filters.
And I haven't even started drinking yet.

Now THAT is slick! I don't know why alot of people make things more difficult then they need to be! I like that...Straight to the point, looks good, and effective!

I remembered i placed it right on top of the winch while i was checking fluids and forgot to put it back on. It wasn't on the winch anymore, of course, so i figured i'd lost it. It wasn't a big deal cuz it was like $12. On the way home, i kept my eyes on the same road i took earlier and ended up finding it on the side of a highway, just laying there. Either I or someone else ran over the top cap and crushed it but that was a $.69 cap, no biggie.
I was thinking of running it across the firewall or somewhere in there to the passenger side but i'm being told that too many angles aren't good for air intakes. I don't know if that's true or not but it won't hurt much i think. I'm also wondering if it would look right on the xj. The tj had a rounded hood while the xj is completely square so will the round pvc look right on the squared xj?

I am sorry if I hurt anyone feeling but if I were you I would save some money and buy a nice one and not make one out of PVC pipe. Those home made PVC ones look horrible. Save your money and get something nice so everyone that sees your Jeep wont be laughing at you for your Micky Mouse set up.

I don't really like the look of the home made ones either but I certainly wouldn't make fun of the people who put them together. The guy who made a DIY snorkel from plumbing supplies is going to be way more accomplished than the **** laughing at him who bought his 4-door JK with the body lift already on it... Real Jeeps are built, not bought.
