I am wanting to put a snorkel on my xj but what I want is to do a, basically, home made one. Does anybody have any tips for this, or anywhere I can find someone who already has?

do a google search for a homemade snorkel. Im sure you will come up with something, basically you need to drill your air box, cut open fender and get some large plastic pipe with a couple of elbow pieces and there you go.

Bump

I've got an interesting situation for this same problem.

While my snorkel isn't going to be entirely homemade; I have a Safart Snorkel outter tubing & am ordering the top breather for it...

However all the internals are going to have to be homemade. That isnt the issue, this is -

1 - My rig has ABS, and I want to keep it, however it is perfectly in the way of where the Safari Snorkel would enter the engine bay

2 - I dont want to use the stock airbox, not for proformance issues, but rather to use that space for a seccond battery location.

Ive been drafting up ideas, but I wanted more insight. Anything??

i have been mentally working on this for a little bit of time , i found this fully enclosed universal filter from k and n ,, looks like it won't take up to much space.

It can be done for less than one hundred dollars. Research, read, design, and let us know how your progress is.

Pics are gone on this thread, but info is still there: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthrea...memade+snorkel

This should help anybody with even minor fab skills to build a decent snorkel.

Good luck,

I just installed my snorkle, and the ABS pump is still intact (though not for long). I used a Land Rover canister filter similar to this:

I, though, brought the hose from the snorkle around and in the front like you would if using the stock airbox, so my canister is sort of setting diagonally, from the TB down to wher the stock airbox was. I'll take some pix soon. This is in a late model XJ, so the windshield washer bottle is in about the same place as the ABS pump on an older XJ (like my '94).

Here we are trying it out last Sunday, up around Sebago Lake:

I do, if anyone is interested, have the snorkle plate for the stock airbox that I ended up not using for sale.

One of my wheeling buddy's made a stealthy one. He ran pvc from the stock box through his firewall only into the cavity under the windshield cowl vents.

His thinking is that if water goes that high up he must not know how to wheel.

I'm doing the same setup on my TJ

FYI: When you put one on people ask all kinds of funny questions and think you can go through anything.

I've run through "mud puddles" that surprised me and swallowed the entire front end of a full size blazer with 33's and 6" of lift. I wouldn't be able to trust a snorkel that only came into the cowl, especially not on a jeep. People stare a lot when they see you have a snorkel though. Especially if its butt ugly, then they think your truck is just super hardcore, haha.

I made my own on my ex-TJ and it worked perfectly.

It came out of the side of the airbox, up through the hood, back towards the windshield and up with a cap on it. Filter never got wet.

When i went 4wheeling with clubs, jeepers would ask me "damn that must've taken some guts to drill a hole in that hood!" and i just reply, "nah, only took a circular saw...". I dunno what's the big deal about drilling a little 4" hole in a hood.

I plan to do this mod to my xj but have to find out if it's legal to have the snorkel on the driver's side. I'm afraid it'll block some of my vision. Not really sure yet.
