3.07s in manuals and 3.55s in autos.

Where is this oil coming from? I just pulled the head in my 99 XJ, and honestly, it wasn't that hard.

It was harder hitting on the wallet than anything.

Yes, it is worth the effort and money, and yes, all will survive, even you.

My advice to you, as one who has spend the better part of 5 years restoring that which was once a nice Jeep Cherokee: take the better part of a day doing a full inspection, noting everything that needs repair/replacement, no matter how small or insignificant. Order parts, and when they arrive, tackle the worst problems first, and the cosmetic stuff later. Even if it involves a new engine, etc., do what you have to do.

I lost track of how many thousands of dollars I've spent, and how many weekends I spent working on this thing. However, in the end, it WAS worth it. Good luck!
Thank you man, after reading this, I felt a strong sense of validation in my life. Like, every dollar I've spent the past 8 months has been worth it. All the problems left to fix on my XJ ARE solvable! </nosarcasm>

Haha my XJ (my 99) has about 16,000$ in it now (bought it with 20,000 miles for 4500$ a few years ago) and seem to never have enough stuff/parts in it. I have yet to have any problems with it. Thats what I get for buying a more used one I guess..Everything seems to be falling apart. It's crazy to me how little some people care about maintence. We have decided to supplant everything of worth (towing package, new exhaust, auto tranny, brakes, new tires etc) into the red one I aquired (a 92). The interior on both of them is amazing.. the red one is almost perfect exterior/engine wise. Ill then part out the white one and scrap the rest.

We only bought the white one because my wife has a 05 tacoma (2wd racing edition) with under 100,000 miles on it and we want to keep the value up on that. plus it was great in Louisiana but will not go anywhere in the snow/ice up here.

Thanks for your guys help... should I change the gears in the red one after the tranny swap or will those work for the time being?

I dont think redoing the head on the white one would be that hard but one of the axle bearings is going out, the steering column is loose... haha just seems more trouble than its worth.. rather have one good one out of the two.
