First off, keep shifting it manually if you must drive it.
It is electronically controlled by a trans control unit using solenoids inside.
Do this first.
I believe your tCU is located somewhere else though.

2 rather large connectors. One is black and goes to the NSS and the gray connector goes to the transmission itself
. These 2 connectors carry all the info between TPS, TCU, NSS, speed sensor, and transmission solenoids.

Unplug each one, visually inspect for corrosion or bent pins, spray them out with electrical contact cleaner and plug them back in.

Additionally, if your Jeep is an ’87 to ’90 Renix, it’s always a good idea to reach up under the glovebox area and unplug the connector to the TCU and spray it out along with the receptacle of the TCU. While you’re there, find the fuse right in that area for the TCU. Remove it and spray out it’s receptacle and clean any corrosion from the fuse.

Then you likely have a TCU issue.

I shoulda been more clear. Somewhere between the tCU and the trans solenoids you could have a problem. Did you do Tip 10 on my website?

I'm glad to see you're so well informed.

Except for one thing. All XJs with the AW4 had those connectors in the engine bay as described in Tip 10.

An excerpt from the introduction on the site:

"A simple multimeter is handy along with a few other basic tools……so dive in and get to know your Renix Jeep.

Some Tips also transfer to later years, or the techniques can be adapted."

Yeah. That's a no go. Went through all my grounds again, including the one in the cab. No change

When you say the vehicle is "slow" on take off, does the engine rev out of control or just lag?

I guess i would say lag when i put it in Drive or let off break from a stop, and push the gas. It revs to 2500rpms before it starts moving then it starts to move slowly till about 30-35mph, then acts normal. The motor sounds Very strong. No knocks or grinding anywhere. In 1-2 it drives like a bat outta hell., and shifts to 2nd at about 25-30mph...
