I was wondering if i adjust it would it make it better? i read last night on some of the sloppy steering threads but i just dont know if thats my problem or not. also when i make a u turn or some tight turn my xj seems to skips around the turn. any suggestions?

ive adjusted my steering box, it made a big difference - DO NOT over adjust as the steering will bind and you may break something or have your steering lock up - not too handy !
when you say its skipping on tight turns, thats prolly a seperate problem and usually something to do with the diffs being locked up ? or if its 4wd the transfer box ( centre diff or whatever you want to call it ) being locked up, only noticable when in a turn as the wheels are atempting to travel at different speeds but are not allowed too. ??

Here are some of the posts you're probably referring to. Check post #5. That's where I'm at. Still have "the dead zone" after replacing the steering gear. Going after the pump next, but haven't done it yet.

I hate shotgun repairs (throwing parts at it till it's fixed), and usually avoid it like the plague. It's the only component I can think of that could be causing the problem so I'm going for it (power steering pump). I've checked everything else.

Does yours ever go away, or is it always like that.

The skipping happens sometimes. The thing I'm really worried about it the sloppy steering. I have alooot of play maybe like an inch or so. My gf tried to drive my jeep and had to pull over cuz she couldn't handle it. I'm used to it and drive it like any other car but I've had enough of the slop and want everything tight

Well I didn't even turn it that much at all and it helped the steering tighten up now I got a leak from the box.
