slave cylinder replacement
just wondering if anyone had any tips on this as i have to replace mine this weekend. is there a tech writeup anywhere on the procedure? i looked at a haynes manual and laughed out loud in the auto parts store looking at that piece of crap. not worth the paper its printed on,lol. also, what else should i look for in regards to looking for wear and tear to the tranny while i have it out? any info on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Sorry automatic here. Last slave cylinder I changed was on a 70 something Chevy pick-up. Can't recall any problems with that replcement. Pretty straight forward and the bleeder was on the slave so it took two people to bleed the system, just like brakes.
Hope it is the same type system in an XJ!

What tranny do you have? If it is the BA-10 tranny, it has to be removed to R/R the slave. If you have questions PM me, as I have done the swap on the BA-10. On an AX-15, I don't know how that one is done! Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!!

Thanks for jumping in I answered him last night but as I stated I have no experience with Jeep manual trannies. Do you really have to drop the tranny to replace the slave cylinder. If you do that is a pretty poor engineering snafu IMHO.

thanks for your input guys. i'm not sure what tranny it is to be honest. i'm new to xj's so i'm not sure how to tell which tranny it is. its a 5 speed manual 91 xj.
i do know the slave cylinder is indeed inside the tranny requiring it to be pulled to be replaced. definitely a pain as i understand most slave cylinders are outside the tranny and relatively easy to replace. i'm told ford's manual tranny's also have the slave inside the tranny.
cosxjfan, thanks for offering to help with some info. pm sent. i'll keep everyone posted as to the progress and will take pics for a writeup while i'm doing it.

yea they arent too hard to replace as ive heard, but its a good idea to buy and replace the "slave cylinder assemby", not the just the "slave cylinder". It will help prevent leaks later on. Price difference is like $50 vs $250 but you actually save on labor.
If it's a 91 it should be an AX-15. I think they only put the BA-10 in 89-90. On the AX-15 I think it's external, and therefore much easier to change! Try searching NAXJA for a tech on it. Good luck!!

not sure what tranny it is, but the slave cylinder is definitely internal on my xj. i called autozone on it, the slave cylinder assembly runs $109.00. they are even going to print up a how to write up on it for me
i'll be tearing into this on saturday. i'll keep everyone posted on the progress. thanks for your help!

Take pictures and then do a tech article to help those of us who are in the dark. It can be added to the article library that we are starting to accumulate.
You might consider dropping the t-case first, it makes it a little lighter and easier to balance on a trans jack. I just had mine out to replace the syncros. Not much you can check without splitting it open. Try draining the fluid in a large clear jar. See how much brass you have floating around. Will tell you how much the syncros are wearing. Other than the syncros the ax15 holds up well.
