Short block?
Hey y’all!
New here on the XJ forums. Have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0l. Long story short I have bad engine. I’ve been trying to find short blocks for a replacement although it seems like they’re hard to come by. I looked into jasper and it’s about $2500 for a long block plus core etc. so that’s a no go. I’m a mechanic and my job can get a used engine from LKQ(used auto place) for $1100-1300 depending on the mileage plus a core plus shipping costs although the down side is they just check the compression. Nothing else. Another option would be on eBay I believe it’s a company called mabco or something and it’s a remanufactured short block for 1000 plus $250 in shipping. It has a 3k mike 3 month warranty which isn’t a really anything. As for my last option I saw a few used engines off of “car-part.com” but I don’t know how I feel about them. What is the best option. I didn’t exactly want to plan on spending $1000 because I bought the car and was told it needed a new head due to overheating. Put a clear water head on it to realize that there was a large knocking and that it had spun a rod bearing and has some cylinder wall damage. What is the best option? If anyone has other ideas please post. Was planning to use this as a daily driver but things hit the fan. I have tools and a place to work. Thank you all.

You can try these guys. https://www.sandjengines.com/
I have not purchased from them, but in my paranoia I decided to see how much a used engine would be. Not only did they sell short and long blocks, when I spoke to the guy he told me that they use a TUPY head due to the issues with the factory head. Of all the places I called, this was the only one that had knowledge of our factory head, or didn't try to give me some line about the head being fine on their engine.

You said your a mechanic can't you just rebuild you own engine . It would be cheaper then getting a shot block , and then you know whats in your motor .

cylinder wall damage and spun a bearing. It would cost more to fix it in just machine work than to buy a short block..? Like $800-900 with machine work alone. Without parts.

Then I guess that boring the block wont fix it , and the crank can't be fixed ? how bad is the cylinder wall damage. did it get checked to see that boring can get rid of the damage ? I've rebuilt alot of motors that had cylinder wall damage and boring got rid of the damage . I'm just asking .

The area I’m at though the lowest prices for just machine work are going to be $800-900 without parts. So by the time I get everything done the proper way with genuine good parts, it’ll be more than what it would cost to purchase a short block or maybe even a long block.

With those prices I would get a used short block and then hone the cylinder walls and install new rings then replace all the crank bearings and install a new oil pump at lest you know it should last a good long time .

Buy a decent used engine from someone on the forum whose been around long enough to be trusted.
What year engine do you need and where are you located?

I’m following. I do understand. Just looking for short block options. It was suppose to be a daily. I just don’t want to turn it into a project car lol
2000 or 2001 4.0l. I’m unsure which block number I have. I know there’s two and they mount different. Where would I locate the number? I’m in south jersey.
- XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
- 2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
- YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ
- XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications.
