Just to toss it out there, according to the owners manual for the Jeep with the NP321 you should be rolling at around 1-3 mph and then engage it with the transmission in neutral. Ive often done this and never had an issue. Although there are definitely times which necessitate engaging it in at a standstill, and I have also never had issues doing that.

If you're sitting still and can't get it to engage, let it roll an inch or two or slap it in D or reverse for a split second. They don't have synchros so they do get in slight binds every now and then.

Apparently some of them get in a bind and won't disengage when going back to 2wd. Mine barely does it but if it does, I usually just rip the E brake real quick while driving

If the gears didn't quite engage while sitting still or slightly rolling forward, then spinning them the other way can release the binding and/or slap them in to place

Putting it in neutral is perfectly fine. I usually roll forward or backward to make sure its engaged and disengaged also. Just an extra precaution. Although, it's kinda hard to not realize you're in or out of 4lo.
