So I have a 97 cherokee se with a 5 speed. When ever I drive the shift light comes on normally and I usually end up driving in 4 gear and go into 5th gear only when I'm on the highway and going at least 70 mph. Recently my shift light comes on much faster and when going 40 mph it says to go into 5th gear and this just started in the past week. I don't know if I need to trans oil or what. Any help is much appreciated thanks!

 

The shift light is just a factory "shift now for best economy" deal. As far as how its calculated I'm not sure but in my honest opinion, drive it how it feels right, not by how the light says to drive it

 

I hate those damn shift lights. I have only owned 2 vehicle with it and I pulled the bulb on both of them. Like Parsnip said just shift when it feel right.

 

It's driven by the PCM based on lord knows what. If the engine runs fine the sensors are probably OK. Ignore the light.

 

Yeah, maybe pull codes to see if anything that could affect the light is an issue. After that, electrical tape over the light.

 

A case of "Stay away from the Light, Little One..." ...probably one of the few lights in the dash that could be ignored...
