Probably a transfer case swap where the key on the case is different than the original. Or someone did something funky with your linkage.

I'm pretty sure that the transfer case for my 00 TJ shifted the opposite way of the transfer case on my 95 XJ.

Does it go into 4hi (actual) somewhere in the shifter's Neutral zone?

Yeah, so definitely a linkage/transfer case mismatch. Apparently if you use an NP231 out of a Dodge Dakota you'll get the reverse shifting pattern. If you believe the interwebs, it sounds like no big deal and shouldn't be a problem functionally.

They're awesome - Welcome to the Jeep world and the Cherokee Forum. You will find a lot of great folks on here with a lot of expertise if you have any problems.

I'd recommend getting yourself a Factory Service Manual (FSM) (pacificcoastmanuals.com is a popular source) if you haven't already. Also check out Cruiser54.com for a ton of great info and tips for your 89.

While throwing good sources, there is a guys who makes renix scanners, nickintimedesigns. For our renix motors his REM (Renix Engine Monitor) is spot on and worth every penny! Just waiting for him to release next version, should be any day now....
