Hey for those of you with 5 speeds and a stock shift light, is the shift light dependant on your RPM and gear? or your SPEED and gear?

It is set for fuel economy... It will keep your RPM's VERY low if you shift when it says to. But its your RPM and gear.
I never pay any attention to it. If it makes me drive slower than I do now... that SLOW......

how do you know its based on RPM/gear not speed/gear? and its kind of stupid like ill be doing a pretty decent speed and wont really need a whole lot more power and ill be in 3rd gear but it wont tell me to shift, itll keep me in 3rd while i could save like 300 RPMs by going into 4th and yet still have the same momentum (3rd and 4th are retarded 3rd is way to high its like freaking same as 4th)..... then as far as 1st and 2nd go itll tell me to shift before i even hit 2000rpm, wtf? i mean that might be okay but whys it telling me to wait to shift out of 3rd untill 2k? thats just stupid do they thikn the regualr speed limit is like 60? most states its 45, dumb....
i only had that for a short time, but i couldnt understand it(i kept thinking "dont tell ME when to shift gears, dammit!"). i always ignored it, because i know if i shifted from 1st to 2nd or from 2nd to 3rd when it said so it would be way to low rpm and just bog the engine. but i did a guage cluster swap shortly after i bought mine and i no longer have the shift instructor......dont miss it.

Shift when YOU want to shift, forget about that light, its just a suggestion of when you should shift anyway, you don't HAVE to shift when that light comes on.
- Also I think engine load has a lot to do with when the light comes on.

Actually, it is programed to light based on engine rpm, throttle opening, engine load ,and vehicle speed and generally is weighted for best economy. The light is merely suggesting that you shift for best economy. If the manufacturer could do it inexpesively they would make something to shift your manual trans for you based on computer programs. But like the man said, it is just a suggestion, shift it when you want to and ignore it unless your lookin' to get better gas mileage.
