Default shift lever

i have a 84 cherokee.4.0 with auto trans and selec-trak..the dang shift lever for the 4x4 will not budge..it drives fine in two high like it is.but im sure im gonna need 4x4 before winter is over..any nideas on why it would be stuck?

Check the linkage under the jeep? It might be caught on something. Your Tcase lever might be all gummed up and rusted also. Try sticking a wrench on the nut (on tcase where lever is) and turning it to see if it will budge.

i got it to move enough to get it into part time 4x so im thinking it is just all crudded up.

Don't keep reefing on the lever. Go under the Jeep and see what's going on first.

Just curious, is your jeep in neutral and running but not moving when you are trying to engage the four wheel drive? If not give it a try like that. I know my shifter wont move unless standing still and running in neutral.

i plan on crawling under it in the morning when i get home from work.i took the cover plate off the console and there is some rust and a bunch of crud around the shifter.guess ill clean and lube that then get under it and do the same.the guy i got it from said he hsant used the 4x in about 3 yrs.

Spray the linkage down with some WD40 or PB and loosen it up some. Never try to force it in, you could bend the shifter fork. Its possible the shaft is binding inside the case also.
