If you have an AW4 the shifter handle just pulls straight off. Not sure how the **** for a manual works. You didn't specify which you had.

you have to turn the lock nut under the shift ****. you need to turn it clockwise, to spin it toward the floor to relieve the pressure, then twist the shift **** off counterclockwise.

i looked at my tj, and there is no lock nut. they just twist off.
i thought 5spd xj's had the lock nut tho. if it does, then you just back the locknut away from the shift **** then simply just twist the shift **** off.
don't pop the top piece out, there is nothing under it.
it's gonna be tight, but i'm sure it just screws off.
you can buy rock-***** and shifter extensions for tj's that are threaded.

Do you hear banjos?
Should be a little round peice of metal at the base of the ****. It will have two flat spots in it's sides, looks like a great place for a wrench to "grab" on to. Loosen this, and the **** should screw off. If the jam nut is tight, you can twist till the cows come home, and ALL you'll get is hand cramps and arm pump!! LOL!! HTH!!

No it was a manual, i think it was 4wd.com...i think. It was pretty sick though. He sold the tj for a pickup. I told him to take the **** off so i could fab it to fit on mine but he wouldnt let me take it off. It was sweet lookin though
