Shell Rotella
Hi Everyone,
I know there are a lot of people who swear by Shell Rotella on the jeep forums, and I saw that Advanced Auto has a big sale on it and was thinking of picking some up.
I have a 98 XJ with 210k miles on it (daily driver) and have been running Penzoil High Mileage for the last 4 changes. I've had the xj for about a year and a half now so I can't speak for what oil was in it before.
Jeep has the usual lifter tick (could be exhaust leak, but pretty sure it's the lifters ) so a thicker oil with the zinc additive is attractive to me.
Any thoughts on running the shell vs a high-mileage formula with this kind of mileage and unknown history?
Thanks!

How much is one of those 1 gal jugs at Advance Auto right now? I need to do an oil change soon, might as buy it while it is on sale
Rotella did not really quiet my lifter tick, but my XJ seems to run really well with Rotella. Starts up smoothly even when it is really cold, holds oil pressure great even when really hot.
It is a diesel oil, so heavy on the detergents which is great for cleaning up an older motor - mine looks excellent under the valve-cover. You do run the risk of cleaning out some sludge that was holding a failing gasket together, but I would rather identify a failing gasket before it ruptures too much, rather than having a sludgy engine that technically leaks "less" than if you were to clean it.

I have 275,6xx miles on mine right and switched Shell Rotella T6 5-w40 about 15,000 miles ago and will run that till the jeep dies or the body rots off of it which ever comes first. If you have a lot of sludge in the engine it will clean it up for you. (as noted before)

Those prices are pretty much what walmart sells rotella for every day..
I always run the full syn rotella (5w 40) in my 4.0s with a mopar filter (090)
It has proven itself to be fantastic in 4.0s that have ran it over time through oil analysis.
My current XJ (01 with 170k) has some clatter at idle..but holds great oil pressure..not sure if its just lifter noise..or what..but im not too worried about it..
The stuff is fantastic, and cheap.

Great, thanks for the suggestions everyone. Now that it's getting warmer, I think I'll try it for a change or two and see what happens - if I spring a leak at least it will be nice enough to work on outside.
Those are the prices I saw in my email; I don't typically track that brands price, but it sounds like the deal is pretty typical.
For those going to Advanced auto to pick some up, the deal expires on March 30th.

I've been using the Rotella T6, which is synthetic, for quite a while now, since Salad suggested it in his oil article.
It seems to use less oil than it did originally, when I bought it 18 months ago.
I figured that the lifter noise was kinda normal..

I'll run the T5 when it's on sale. Can't really go wrong with any of the Rotella.
