Default Serpentine Belt

Ok I have a dumb question, I'm about to replace my serpentine belt. After I loosen the 4 bolts holding the power steering pump, should I just be able to swing it by hand, and is the tensonor bolt just for final adjustment? Thanks for your help.

You should not have to loosen the pump just the tensioner pulley.

On the 4.0 loosen the tensioner pulley about 3/4 turn, then turn down the adjust above it. That will move the pulley down and loosen the belt enough to remove it.

What year Cherokee? 99+ is via a tensioner pulley with the adjustment bolts, older models (square tube looking intake manifold instead of a big round hump under the throttle) you have to loosen the bolts of the power steering pump.

no need to do power steering just loosen the tensioner pulley then back off the tension and go a little extra for the fitment of the new belt

Maybe true for other years but on your 92, you'll need to loosen the bolts on your power steering pump and then back the tensioning adjustment bolt out until you can slip the belt off. Just did it on my '89 last week to replace the harmonic balancer.

Default Loosen the Adjuster Tool

This is the tool construction I use to acces the tension adjust bolt under the power steering pump on my 89. Allows me a decent swing in tight spot and I can keep the socket engaged without trying to contorsion my other hand down in there.
