I believe 96 and below XJs. My 96 has a 3/4 tank and I believe they have been like that for their entire life prior. Most after 96 used a plastic tank with the sending unit through the top. Yours should be on the face, facing the diff. You will know if it will work because it will be kind of L shaped for you. Best way I could describe it.

ya i was told in another thread that a 93 sending unit wont work because its not compatible...from what i been reading it seems that 94 and below use one model, 95-96 use another model, and 97 and up use a different model....or maybe im not nderstanding properly....

can anyone confirm this?

and yes mine is side mount, i changed my tank out and fond the sending unit has a leak...

This is what mine looks like (the shape atleast)

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...1997&ppt=C0039

You still want to make sure the wet and dry connections are gonna be the same. Make sure that the harness is the same shape, no return,...yada yada yada

Also the leak could just be the tank seal which is a $8 dollar part from jeep.
