I have a Dec 1994 XJ and I need a new sender unit that are nolonger available. I currently have fitted a Carter pump and sender unit for a 93. This did fit but starts off quiet but gets very very noisy after about 10 minutes. I see that the 93 has a ballast resister for the pump that mine being a 94 doesn't have. Does anybody know if it will stay quiet if I fit a ballast resistor to this one.

I have also heard that the return line could be touching the bottom of the tank causing the screeming noise. It doesn't do it when it is cold so I assume that this is not the problem.

I have just fitted a new fuel tank that Rockauto tells me will fit a 93 and a 94. The Carter fuel pump says it will fit both a 93 and a 94 and replaces my factory part number.

I could get a second hand sender unit but I liked the idea of using a new one as I don't want to have to continue to do this job over and over.

Do you mean the fuel gauge sender unit? Generally speaking such parts are generic, fitting many vehicles over several years, so the answer may be to identify the old unit, rather than trying to find a replacement only by application.

 

Yes fuel gauge sender unit. Well the 93 fuel pump and sender unit is in there and working in my 95. The first time I drove it after about 10 minutes it screemed for the next 2 hrs. The next time I drove it , it was quiet. Not sure if it going to start screeming again. Its a Carter.
