not the most interesting topic, sorry...
am i being an monumental idiot? i bought a 2000 XJ Sport earlier this week. it was in the shop having a couple of things done, so not driven it much. picked it up today, put belt on. the belt does not lock when pulled hard (i.e. like if you were in a smash, it would not lock). tried passenger one, same thing. tried rear belts, same thing. whats the deal here? the manual says they should be auto locking belts. is there something i need to do to activate them? or are they all knackered? although that seems pretty amzaing for all 4 to have gone on a 10 year old jeep with only 67K on clock.
help...

doesn't sound likely, it sounds more likely that
1) They don't actually auto lock ( i know mine don't- 94 country)
2) They were all replaced for some reason or another with ones that dont ratchet lock.
If you still have doubt I would take apart the housing and look at it, that will confirm the problem

I also have a 2000 xj sport and I went out and tried to get the seat belts to lock as I have done with other vehicles by pulling the strap all the way out then releasing a few inches and pulling again. They will not lock. If you have one child seat the center rear seat may be your best option. If you have two kids in child seats you may be able to buy new seat/shoulder belts that will lock in the "normal" manner.
This thread may interest you but I did not find a cure for the non-locking seat belts.

I thought I was having e same problem. I took my belts out and kept fiddling with them, trying to get them to work. I mentioned it to my father, and he informed me that a lot of older model vehicles with retracting seat belts are designed with an inertia lever in them that engages the lock. When the lever moves forward due to sudden deceleration (hard braking or impact) the lever engages and locks the belt. He told me that the best way to test the belt was to take it out of the car and hold it at and angle and pull on the belt. I did this and the belt locks just fine.
Also, for what it is worth, my XJ is an 87.
Hope this helps.

BTW most fire departments have 'child seat belt' experts that will show you the correct way to use your child seat. Also many child seats come with a metal plate about the size of a credit card to the lock the shoulder and lap belt together.

thanks for replies. i tested the belts out today and found exactly that - i did an emergency stop after a mate suggested it ad they work just fine!
Still not sure about child seat in there as no hooks to latch it to, so will be reliant on belt and that clip you mentioned which seems a little hap hazard, but as i live pretty near to a fire station, going to swing by there and see what they recommend.

I got one of those clip locks that clips on near where you buckle in which keep the lower portion of the belt taught, the top still relies on the inertia lock. Is this ok you think? If not, not sure how else to secure the seat apart from buying a new belt as there are no firm brackets to attach the seat to otherwise.
