Default is this rusted spot fixable?

Hi everyone! Quick question...

How would I fix this (circled in photos):

Is there anything we can do aside from welding? It looks awful!

Thanks so much!

Had the same issue. Vent was clogged and rusted.
Cut that piece out of a good one. (inside and outside) then welded it in. Not too bad... Thats the only proper way.

Yeah cut away all rust, then weld in a new piece or a patch.
Or you could cut and fold the quater panels.

There are two ways you can fix that without welding I can think of. Neither would be as good as welding, but here are my ideas-

First (and how I plan to fix all my lower body rust after I do my rock rails)- cut out all the rust with angle grinder/dremmel. Paint all exposed adges. Cut patch panel slightly over-sized to fit, paint all exposed edges/back side of patch. Pop-rivet in place. To hide the "ugly" patch, bedliner the sides from the trim down.

Second way would be to just cut the rear quarters off below the trim - paint and fold. :-)

And how would I go about doing that? Sounds interesting enough to try. And I assume I will be doing it to the other side as well. And once that's done how is the bumper going to look?

Thanks!

Very helpful. I do much better with picture step by step instructions so this will come in handy if we decide to go the folding route.

Thanks! Everyone is giving such great ideas. I love it.

I had a similar spot. I actually cut out the bad stuff, sprayed it with rustoleum and layed fiberglass mat. Sanded and painted it, A year later, still looks great.

you can fix anything with enough money. are both sides the same. and why not just do the cut and fold to get the rear section higher and out of danger from wheeling. i think a few members here have done the mod look at the cos build to see what i am talking about

I was gonna suggest that too. Thanks for finding the link. Kristel you should sign up over on NAXJA.org too. You'll find some more helpful tech over there. and you'll find that I have about 4000 more posts there too!

I agree with everyone who recommends welding. I faced the same, even worse rust, on both sides of my beloved 89 xj. I sprayed the holes full of "Great Stuff" foam. After it cured I sanded, Bondoed and sprayed it. The fix has been in for a year and still looks good. Anyway, it's an idea-j
