I’m in a weird situation. I have this beautiful XJ. I bought it and it had more rust than I thought it would have. Not knowing what I was doing or that I should’ve just run right there, I brought it to my mechanic and auto body shop and told them to do whatever it takes to make it perfect. I spend tons of money on it and put awesome modifications into it. OME suspension system, stinkyfab engine mounts plates and transmission mount, tune up, fuel injectors, entire new front end of MOOG parts, and welded in new support to the rear part of the vehicle (where the worst of the rust was). So I spent loads of money on a rust bucket, but after being meticulously gone over by my mechanic and told its fixable, I have an awesome jeep that’s super fun to drive and should last a long time. My mechanic isn’t some random dude, it’s a professional shop my family has gone to for years, and isn’t someone who would just screw me over.
I want to get your guys opinions on these pictures though. Does this still look like rust problems? Is it hard to tell? Or just what are your thoughts? Lay it on me please! Not worried about the money just need the truth and thoughts! Much appreciated.
**Attached photos are highlighting the worst of what is under there
**I know for a fact it isn’t just “rust sprayed with POR 15, so what would be another alternative?
Yeah, that is a lot of rust, seen much worse however. To get an idea of the extent of rust, remove that black paint. The rear looks particularly ugly. Looks like you rocker panel drain holes of which there are 4 or 5 per side have been hammered closed. Get them blocked drains fixed.
Open the doors, examine door sills, lower door hinge mounts too. examine foot wells and cargo area from inside, pull carpets up to see the floors.
examine pinch seams on bottom of door skins for rust stains.
In some of those pictures there are flakes of goop covered rust already delaminating from whatever is underneath.
Overall it's not too bad but the places where the goop is on top of rust are going to trap moisture and salt.

I kind of agree with ExASEMech. Someone went around with a few cans of rubberized 'Rust-proof-in-a-can' stuff and sprayed all around. They tried to cover up the rust and it just makes it look worse. The best thing would be to probably flake all that off in the rusty areas. All it's doing at this point is holding moisture *in* and making things worse. Overall it's not severe rust. You want to see severe rust, come and look at my snow plow XJ. The rockers are gone, Floors weak, the front leaf spring perches are like pie crust. Not sure what's holding it all together. And yet it really rams into the snow banks and plows great.
