Running Rough 1994 xj 4.0
While out today my 94 XJ with 4.0 started running very rough.
popping through the intake, not being able to throttle up. No codes came up.
I tried Unplugging O2 sensor. I looked for vaccum leaks, unplugged Crank sensor, coolant temp sensor checked all connections. Ran good for maybe and minuteand then the same symtoms arose. I finnaly got it running good enough to take off and it ran poor for about a mile or so, I lugged it 1/4 throttle to the road in 4th gear.
Then it started running well again and i drove it about 5 miles home. I figured it was the crank postion sensor. So i went and bought a new one and made sure it was for manual tranny put it in and ran it.Let it idle in the driveway, few minutes in it starts loading up and almost dying. Thinking now coolant temp sensors bad, i take one off my 92 cherokee motor and it ends up doing the same thing.
Any ideas what to go after next? It seems intermitten ,and running rich?

------> This sounds like it's o2 related. When the engine starts sucking a lot of air and runs as you described, it sounds like a symptom called running dead lean. It's when the o2 sends a faulty signal to cut out fuel and run (dead) lean. At WOT the o2's are bypassed and won't cause this issue. Also, no CEL does not mean there aren't codes stored that could give you some direction. And even still, the best way is to have a good diagnostics computer plugged in WHILE its happening so you can look over all sensor functions, etc.

------> unplugging the sensor isn't always a 100 percent accurate test. Usually if it works, its short lived. Vacuum leak/s are very possible! Def test thoroughly with something combustible like carb or brake cleaner around vac connections. An increase in RPM's will indicate a leak.

I swapped in an o2 off my old xj and it has been running good. Ran it last night for an hour and today about the same. Keeping fingers crossed . Thanks again
