Default running heater blower off battery

I have been running blower off battery with both ground and positive. The alligator clip has been getting very hot. No fuse all direct 1 speed. On the way home tonight from a meeting the wires were glowing at connection at clip. I took them apart. Lucky only had 4 miles to go. Little chilly was -3 when I got home.

My question is if blower motor is ok should the wires get hot. Or don't I have heavy enough wire doing the job and should I have it fused. This is on a 89 Cherokee. Thanks Ken

Use heavier gauge wire and fuse it at whatever the blower is fused at in the box, IIRC 20 amps. If the fuse blows the motor is pulling too much current.

Bingo.

The blower motor demands a high current, even on the low setting.

Crummy clips, wiring being too small gauge, poor or damaged connectors at the blower motor will all cause meltdowns.

As you can tell I ain't no Finnish Genius but call myself one.

I'll call my other buddy and have him run me what I need. Will get a spool of 12 wire and some new alligator clips plus a inline fuse holder and a few 20 amp fuses. All I need is 1 but nice to have spares.

Is it possible to lube fan or motor bearing?

Me memory isn't that sharp but( fan did squeek once last week) but disconnected fan and started it back up with no problem. It happens but not very often. Ken619 or Hoot619

I ended up cutting the wires back putting a new end and A. clip on .Tried it out, Stayed cool will add the fuse in AM after I run to town, probably add a toggle switch that I found also. Be warm in the Jeep to do it.

learned something, frayed wires get hot.. Probably won't forget about it either!! Ken
