I have a theory on water temp gauge readings, not sure if it make any sence though. If the gauge is reading in the 160-180 it means the water is not absorbing as much heat as it should, the water is moving through the engine too fast. Sure the gauge makes it look like you're running cool, but you could actually be running hotter than what is on the gauge. If the gauge is in the 210-220 range, it means the water is absorbing more heat and carrying it to the radiator. The water is staying in the block longer and kind of soaking the heat in away from the cylinders and head. Just a theory I have.

Verify the temp at the thermostat with an IR thermometer. If your gauge is off, clean the contact and the threads of the sender. Reverify. If it is still off, replace sender.
Or your rad cap needs to be replaced. Most of the time slight overheating issues are pressure related.
When was the last time any of the components (fan clutch, thermo, rad cap) were replaced? Sounds girly, but a cooling system is like a big harmony between all the parts.

It makes total sence. I've only had the xj about 3 months. Just went and bought new fluids and therm......the part that confuses man is why now with a new water pump is it getting hot nd before it was fine
