+1 to the whole thing. Also of note is that a new clean filter will increase the amount of pressure shown on the gauge. Especially so if one goes from a cheap clogged filter to a nice low-restriction unit. Just changing out a clogged filter to a new one of the same type can result in a change of up to 8 PSI.
More than that. If your oil filter is clogged enough for the bypass to kick in, you'll drop quite a bit. Enough to scare you into stopping at a parts store on vacation and doing a filter change in the parking lot, only to sigh a great big sigh of relief when your pressure pops back up where it should be.
