1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport
4.0 Automatic transmission

Let me preface this by saying, I have already replaced or checked the NSS,TV Cable, fluid levels, TCU, fuses(if they even have anything to do with the trans), and TPS. I think that covers everything. So now, the issue. When my jeep sits overnight or for long peroids of time, the shifts from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd are
very rough. It will get to a really high rpm then abruptly shift. it only does it on those shifts.but after driving for about 5 minutes the shifting, for the most part is completely normal. The next step is to check shifting solenoids i think but i wanted to see if you guys had any ideas. Any suggestions are much appreciated by me(and more so my wife)🤦*♂️

Im using dex/merc ATF. And I changed the fluid about 4 months ago because I had a small tranny leak. I didn’t pull the pan to change the gasket so it still has a small leak. But it has fresh fluid that’s nice a red

Double check the TV cable adjustment. Between the little ball on the end and where that ball actually begins to pull should be about the thickness of a dime.

That cable is frayed and could be hanging in the housing causing high pressure shifting.

Yeah, it looks in bad shape to me too.

It definitely could be that. But what’s weird is that once the transmission gets heated up it shift normal for the most part.

What do YOU think your next step should be?

unfortunately I think the next thing is the solenoids. So I guess I’ll do that and check back. Thanks for the ideas

What do you think would be next? I’m just stumped because of the fact is gets better after it warms up. Seems like it would have to be something that is affected by the fluid temps. But I don’t know enough about transmissions to diagnose it. I’m die a little on the inside every time it jerks when I shift.

First off, the trans will be fine. They're tough as nails.
Disconnect the TV cable from the throttle linkage. Push the cable back into the sheath. Go drive it.

Well I figured I’d go ahead and change the fluid and take a look at things while I was at it. I noticed on of the connectors for the solenoid was loose. After further inspection I realized it was actually cracked and barely hanging on. I’m going to dig this up because apparently the plastic clip that broke is impossible to find( that what I found after 5 hours of searching the internet and
