-20 to -30

If you're going to see -40, 5w is no longer really sufficient and you should switch to a 0w

The 30 and 40 have nothing to do with low temperature performance unless you're using monograde SAE30 or SAE40

Ugh... don't do that... then you'll be dealing with summers over 100* like we were this year. It's pretty bad when 80* is considered a "cold front".

Why is this not a stickey?
Great info, I've passed over this thread several times but finally decided to read it. Now I know why it's so awesome other then "it's what cruiser suggested" lol.

I see -40 but have always used 5w. It's typically been difficult to find 0w, though 0w PCMOs are becoming common now. Think I've only seen Rotella 0w40 in person once though.

Weird, Delvac 1 ESP has had 0w40 for some time, I think. I've been buying Rotella T6 0w40 since I first saw it on the shelves here about a year and a half ago, and I've noticed it's even now available at least as far south as central NY

fwiw.
I've used Rotella for 175,000 in this :

which is at 369,000 original "me" miles .

I use a 5:1 ratio combination of this

and this

every 3000 miles and it seems to be working pretty well. Jeep on!
